Garden Like a Pro: Easy Planting Tips for Beginners
Spring is officially here, and whether you have a big backyard or a sunny balcony, May is the perfect time to get your hands in the dirt and add a little green to your space. If you’re new to gardening (or just want something low-maintenance), these beginner-friendly tips and plants will help you garden with confidence!
Start Small with Containers
You don’t need a full garden bed to get started. Containers are a great way to grow flowers, herbs, or even veggies on patios, decks, or window sills. Plus, they’re easier to manage, especially if you’re just dipping your toes into gardening. Look for pots with good drainage and use quality potting soil for the best results.
Go for Low-Maintenance Winners
Not all plants are created equal when it comes to ease. Here are a few of my personal favorites that thrive with little fuss:
- Lavender – Not only is it beautiful and fragrant, but it also loves dry soil and full sun. Bonus: it attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies!
- Hostas – These leafy greens are perfect for shady spots and require very little care once established.
- Petunias – Bright, cheerful, and low-maintenance — just deadhead the flowers occasionally to keep them blooming.
- Basil & Mint – Easy-to-grow herbs that thrive in pots. Mint can take over if planted in the ground, so containers are ideal!
Don’t Overthink Watering
One of the most common mistakes beginners make is overwatering. A good rule of thumb: water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Morning is the best time to water, especially in warmer weather.
Find the Light
Pay attention to how much sun your space gets. Most flowering plants and herbs need at least 6 hours of sun per day. If you have a shady area, stick with shade-tolerant plants like impatiens, ferns, or begonias.
Make it Yours
Gardening should be fun, not perfect. Mix colors, try different plant heights, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Whether you’re growing fresh herbs for summer recipes or adding pops of color to your porch, the most important part is enjoying the process.
🏡 Thinking of Selling Your Home This Summer?
A colourful, well-maintained garden doesn’t just make your home more enjoyable, it also boosts curb appeal in a big way. First impressions matter, and a tidy yard with blooming flowers and lush greenery can instantly make your property feel more welcoming to potential buyers. Whether it’s a few cheerful planters on the porch or a neatly mulched flower bed, these small touches can make a big impact.
If you’re thinking about making a move this summer and want some tips on how to prep your home for sale (garden included!), I'm happy to help!
