Get Your Home Vacation Ready: Simple Security Tips for Peace of Mind While You’re Away

Planning to sneak away for a summer getaway? Whether it's a weekend road trip or a two-week beach vacation, the last thing you want is to be worrying about your home while you're trying to relax. Here’s how to get your home vacation-ready before you hit the road:
1. Use Timers on Lights
A house that’s completely dark for days on end can be a giveaway that no one’s home. Plug a few lamps into timers or use smart bulbs to create a lived-in look, especially in the evenings.
2. Pause Your Mail and Deliveries
An overflowing mailbox or a pile of Amazon packages on the front step is an open invitation for trouble. Put a temporary hold on your mail through Canada Post, and pause any regular deliveries.
3. Lock (and Double-Check!) Everything
It sounds obvious, but in the rush to get out the door, it’s easy to miss something. Make a checklist to confirm all doors and windows are securely locked, including basement and garage entries.
4. Ask a Neighbour to Keep an Eye Out
Let a trusted neighbour or friend know you’ll be away. Ask them to pop by occasionally, bring in the bins, or just keep an eye out for anything unusual. Bonus: they can also water your plants!
5. Set Up Smart Home Alerts
If you have a smart doorbell or security system, double-check that it’s working and notifications are on. Being able to check in from your phone offers extra peace of mind.
6. Clean Up Before You Go
No one wants to come home to funky smells or overflowing garbage. Take out the trash, clear out perishables from the fridge, and run the dishwasher before you leave.
Bonus Tip: Don’t Overshare on Social Media
It can be tempting to post beach pics in real time, but if your account is public, it’s wise to wait until you're back to share vacation photos. Broadcasting your absence can unintentionally tip off the wrong people.
